"Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you."2 Corinthians 13:11

Terrified to leave my house

Why?
Coyotes.

5 Coyotes to be exact.

5 Coyotes that, in broad daylight, attacked a dog in my neighbour's FENCED backyard.

By neighbour I mean someone who lives down the street from me. Their backyard backs out onto a park. The same park that is right beside our house.

Monday morning I got a text message from our friend who also lives on the street, telling me about the attack. The owner let their dog outside to do it's business and suddenly there were 2 coyotes in her backyard attacking her dog, while 3 others sat outside the fence and watched. She ran out and scared them away. Brave Lady. The dog was fine. Covered in coyotes saliva, but not bit or cut at all. Because she was there and saved him!

So we have coyotes in the area. It's not a new thing. We see them in farmers fields around our area all the time. But NEVER in a pack, and never in OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD!

John figures that the recent cold snap (-45 with the wind chill? remember?), has made it difficult for them to find food. So they have banded together (out of necessity) and come into the neighborhood looking for food. Apparently they will eat anything smaller than themselves...including PETS AND SMALL CHILDREN.

I have pets and a small child.

I usually take my pet and small child for a walk through the park that is now coyote infested every day (when it isn't -45 degrees). Could I keep 5 coyotes away from my dog and baby? No. The thought scares me. So until it is safe again, I'm not leaving my house... except by car since it's in the garage and getting to it doesn't involve going outside.

Animal control has been contacted...but how do I know when it's safe again?

We have a lot of coyotes around here, even in the city. We have actually had attacks on the public walking trails. They are brazing! They have no fear, especially in numbers. Out at M's parents farm they are in the back bush and you can hear them, we can hear them at out house in the village too. They are very unpredictable. It will be interesting to see what they do about them in your area

Scary. I hate coyotes. :( I always get scared when I see them. Glad that pup is safe. :( You tell Rudy to be careful and to pee fast!!

Tami  – (January 24, 2012 9:47 AM)

That is so scary and I don't blame you one bit for not going out! Hope it gets taken care of soon!

Lauren  – (January 24, 2012 9:47 AM)

Yikes! I can't say that I've ever seen any coyotes around here at all. Stay safe!

Oh wow that is scary! We have some in my neighborhood but i live in the country and rarely see them. They NEVER come near houses. Be careful!!

Yikes! That is scary. I am sure you will be fine to go out for a walk with Rudy. Just make sure that you keep him close, stay to the sidewalks and don't go near the park. And I think Henry will be fine too, as he's not walking yet (which means he's in a carrier or a stroller) :) If Rudy isn't getting anxious from not walking, then stay inside where it is safe :)

OMG that is super scary!!! I don't blame you for being concerned to go outside.

I am so weird though and feel bad for the coyotes... I wouldn't want to be outside in the nasty cold weather we experienced last week either!

That is SCARY! I've thought about that when I run near our house. It is very wooded and we have a lot of deer so I know there must be other scarier animals living there!

Natalie  – (January 24, 2012 11:15 AM)

ah, what the heck! scary! I wouldn't either! Do you just stand at the door or window watching Rudy to make sure he doesn't get attacked?! I Would. Poor Rudy! I hope they can get rid of them soon. I don't think we have coyotes around here..I"ve never seen one!

those things are freaky! we have them in our woods as well... ewwwww

Ummmm, OH MY GOSH!!!! I don't blame you!! Just reading about it freaked me out. We occasionally will have coyote sightings around here as well and this past summer we did have a pack moving through. Stray/wild animals were not very lucky, so every time we took our little dog out I was was right next to her on major lookout. I was pretty crazy! I'm glad you have a garage!

Coyotoes have no fear of humans, that's the scary part...as opposed to wolves who will keep their distance at all costs. I know of a woman who was killed in Eastern canada by a pack as she was jogging down a trail. I don't blame you for being worried! We have a coyote pack here too, we hear them howling all the time at night and they come right up near the houses. We've seen them! So, we keep Anna inside.

Melanie  – (January 24, 2012 9:59 PM)

Oh my gosh that is scary! I dont blame you for staying inside..keep yourself, family, and animals safe!

Lyndsey  – (January 25, 2012 6:50 AM)

I would be so scared to leave too!! Coyotes are fuh-reaky!! There was a scare around here over the summer and a lot of small dogs and cats went missing!

Wow I just found your blog by accident when searching for information on breastfeeding. I'm in Calgary, too, and I just heard on Shine FM today that there was a small dog that was killed by coyotes today. Hope yours are ok!
My family members deliver newspapers at night (I haven't in years but I used to), and we have seen coyotes out and about at night as well. Sometimes they don't seem scared of our vehicle which is kind of scary!
